Five of these characters are exclusively on the console. You can also get a head start on the incoming system and balance changes coming our way thanks to Dustloop's great translated guide for the Ver. In addition, there are also eight new characters added to the roster. Persona 4 Arena Ultimax will release on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and Steam on March 17, 2022. We're going to find ourselves in a very unique time next spring when we receive a version of Ultimax that feels familiar yet almost entirely different than what was experienced on consoles all those years ago.

It is unfortunately difficult to determine players' general reactions and feelings on the balance update due to the patch only being available in Japanese arcades as well as the passage of time. Shadows weren't the only things reworked either, as the rest of the roster received a hefty balance overhaul too. This all culminated in the Shadow characters becoming much stronger than they were upon release, and some argue much too powerful compared to the rest of the cast. On top of that, Fury made it so opponents could not Defensive Burst at all while in use, so the other player would have to sit and eat whatever was thrown their way. While Shadows' health were lowered across the board, they gained the ability to Reversal Burst and saw their attack power rise an additional 10%.įrenzy was also overhauled to make it so activation required Burst Gauge instead of SP with the SP Gauge determining the amount of time the power-up is active. To try and remedy the situation for Shadow characters, ArcSys changed almost everything about them in the Version 2.0 update. They had a number of drawbacks, however, like the fact that they had no Burst option whatsoever, and Shadows only did 80% of the damage that their normal counterparts could output. Shadow characters have more health and can use Awakening SP Skills (powerful Supers and abilities that can normally only be used with low life) at any time and contained the new Shadow Frenzy mechanic, which allows them to cancel specials into other specials or Supers. The developers essentially set out to try and correct the shortcomings of the game we received, and most of the big changes were aimed at the Shadow Type characters.Ī majority of the roster came packing Shadow versions of themselves as an interesting new addition to Ultimax over the original Persona 4 Arena, but their arrival fell mostly flat for pretty much everything outside of casual play.

Persona 4 Arena Ultimax is available on the PS3, but will release for the Nintendo Switch, PS4 and PC on March 17, 2022. This approach is said to result in a much smoother experience, one able to hide the “lag” that inevitably affects online play. It will use a system to guess a player’s input and roll back frames when desynchronizing is detected. Rollback netcode, when it is introduced to Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, will replace this with one based on prediction. In situations where bad connections or long distances between players introduces input lag, delay-based games can feel worse to play online. Delay-based netcode is comparatively simpler to to implement, but is particularly bad at compensating for differences in network quality. As fighting games rely heavily on ensuring that players are synced up and are able to register their inputs correctly, various netcode styles are of high importance. In fighting games, the two main forms these strategies take are split into delay-based and rollback. The PS4 and PC patches to add rollback will be deployed in Summer 2022.įor the uninitiated, netcode is basically a way for two network-connected players’ platforms to talk to each other over the internet. At the game’s re-launch in March 2022, the standard netcode will still be the default. In the announcement, Wada noted that the addition of rollback wouldn’t be instant. #P4AU Producer Wada-san has a very exciting message! ? Persona 4 Arena Ultimax Producer Kazuhisa Wada delivered the rollback netcode announcement via a brief message, which was then posted by Atlus West’s Twitter account. The team noted it was considering the idea back in December 2021. The company and Arc System Works opted to improve its online performance through the implementation of the protocol, now preferred for fighters who play online matches.

It is confirmed for the PS4 and PC versions. Atlus will add rollback netcode to Persona 4 Arena Ultimax.
